Academy Award winning filmmakers, Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine present a short film Why I Paint, sharing the story and process of American contemporary artist John Brendan Guinan.
Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine are Oscar, Emmy and Peabody award-winning filmmakers. Critics have hailed their unique storytelling style as unflinching , spirit-raising and visually ravishing. The filmmakers have won numerous awards, including three Emmys for Best Documentary and Best Cinematography, the Sundance Film Festival s award for Best Documentary Direction, an Oscar for Best Short Documentary, and a Peabody award, in addition to a myriad of nominations.
The Fines were drawn to Guinan s work upon talking to him at a chance holiday party they were hosting. Sean and John both grew up in Palisades in NW Washington DC. The film tackles John s relationship with his deceased father and hero Ed Guinan. The short highlights Guinan searching for a connection to his father through painting. and intimately captures Guinan s cathartic process while painting.
Why I Paint premieres at Dupont Underground in Washington DC on March 20, 2018 from 7:00pm-10:30pm. The event features a VIP cocktail hour and exclusive exhibition, featuring new works by the artist. Prior to the screening, artist and subject John Brendan Guinan will deliver an introduction to his work.
